Fujifilm X100F - First Day, First Photos

About two o'clock in the afternoon yesterday the mailman rang the doorbell. He had a box for me. It was a Fujifilm X100F that I had ordered online.

I ripped the package open. It was like light was streaming down from heaven onto the silver and black rangefinder style camera that I was removing from the box. It was a beautiful camera, and a beautiful moment!

I spent the remainder of the day setting the camera up, taking test shots and making adjustments to the camera settings. It's a work in progress. And it'll be a work in progress for some time to come. And it takes time to get used to where all the buttons and controls are located and how to make quick on-the-fly changes. But I felt that it was a productive half-day.

Below are 10 photographs that I captured with the Fujifilm X100F yesterday. These are straight-out-of-camera JPEGs, completely unedited. The camera made these and I did not give them any sort of post-processing. Amazing! I simply used the camera's WiFi to upload the JPEGs to my phone, then I uploaded them from there to the world wide web. It's all been very impressive.

Bravo to Fujifilm for making their excellent JPEG engine even better! I'm highly impressed with the camera already, but stay tuned for the full review, which is probably a couple of weeks away. In the meantime, enjoy the images! And I'll enjoy creating many more.

The Best Camera - iPhone 7 Plus Photography

Apple iPhone 7 Plus
I'm sure you've heard it said a thousand times already, but it's true: the best camera is the one that's with you. There was truth to it when photographer Chase Jarvis coined that phrase awhile back, and it might even be more correct today.

Sometimes I'm out-and-about and I don't have my bigger gear with me. I try to bring a camera along whenever I can, but it's not always practical to do so. Or sometimes I need an image fast because I want to immediately share it. Other times the moment would be gone by the time I grabbed my better gear, so I use what I can get my hands on fast.

Whatever the reason, it's nice to have a compact camera in my pocket that I can quickly snap a picture with. Right now that camera for me is an Apple iPhone 7 Plus. It has decent enough image quality, and I always have it in my pocket.

Use what you have to the best of your ability. Do the best that you can with what you've got. And don't worry about the rest. Photographic vision is more important than gear.

Below are some recent photographs that I've captured with the iPhone 7 Plus. All of them were post-processed with VSCO and some were also post-processed with Snapseed.

A Grand Photoessay: Grand Teton National Park

Mormon Barn - Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Two months ago I traveled to the Grand Teton National Park for the first time. It was high on my to-do list ever since moving to Utah last year. I've wanted to visit ever since I saw Ansel Adams' epic picture of this place many years ago.

It was a quick two-day, one-night weekend getaway with the family. In fact, the trip was a birthday gift from my wife. We stayed in a cabin near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

There were some fantastic photographic moments that I'll never forget. Half of photography is about being at the right place at the right time, and I felt like I was where and when I needed to be to capture some good images.

On the fist day we visited the Snake River Overlook, which was made famous by Ansel Adams. It felt amazing to stand in the footsteps of greatness. The weather was dramatic--first snowing, then clearing enough to clearly view the tall peaks, and with some lifting fog along the river. It was a truly magical moment.

On the second day I got up early to catch the sunrise at Mormon Row. There were layers of overcast sky, but the clouds were constantly changing, with dramatic instances where the sun would shine through. It was stunning!

I was surprised at the large number of photographers that were at this location--there must have been two dozen or more. And this was during the so-called off season. I felt like I was constantly stepping into someone else's photos and others were constantly stepping into mine. But I can certainly understand why this is such a popular place to take pictures.

After that I went to Schwabacher's Landing. The atmosphere here was completely different than at Mormon Row. It was just me and one other photographer. It was so peaceful. And the beauty is grossly understated in my photographs. I felt like I had stepped into a painting. It was unreal! If not for the photographs I might think that I dreamt it all. I really can't find the words to describe how wonderful this place was.

I used a Fujifilm X-E1 camera to capture these images. The main lens that I used was a Helios 44-2 f/2 58mm. I also used a Rokinon f/2 12mm lens, an X-Fujinon f/3.5 135mm lens and an X-Fujinon f/1.9 50mm lens.

Even though it was a quick trip, the beauty that I saw and photographically captured was nothing short of grand. If you've never been you must go, it's worth whatever effort it takes to get there. I look forward to returning and spending more time at the Grand Teton National Park.
